MATES HELPING MATES

The simple idea that MATES are Stronger Together,
making a real difference in our industries.

MATES making a difference

MATES is a bipartisan, not-for-profit organisation created by the Construction Industry to address high rates of suicide among workers. Fifteen years on, the MATES program provides suicide prevention training and 24/7 support to workers and their families within the Construction, Mining, Energy and Manufacturing industries, and has expanded to New Zealand's Construction Industry.

MATES' evidence-based program has been recognised by WHO as a global example of best practice in workplace suicide prevention, and is accredited by Suicide Prevention Australia.

Some words from legendary big lapper, Robyn from WA

When I first heard about MATES, I knew I wanted to do whatever I could to support them. Their work is incredible, and getting involved in the Big Lap was a no-brainer. I love walking, and in my first year, I set a goal to walk 1,000 km while also learning to run. Walking isn’t just great exercise—it helps clear my head. So, combining my love for movement with supporting MATES just made sense.

Starting the challenge wasn’t difficult, but completing it was another story. I spend most of my time sedentary, but during breaks, I made it a habit to walk a lap or two around our site—each lap being 1.5 km. Along the way, I connected with workers, spreading awareness about why I was doing the Big Lap. And I never walked alone—my dog Toffee was by my side for every kilometre, including the ones on site!

I was lucky to be part of a powerhouse team made up of colleagues from Hanssen and Train & Retain (our apprenticeship company). Our team was as diverse as it was supportive—Managing Directors, Field Officers, Admin, Engineers, Apprentices, and Site Tradies. We encouraged each other, shared plenty of laughs, and lifted each other up on tough days. It was the dream team, and I couldn’t have done it with better people. Many of these teammates are my daily go-to people and mentors, so it was perfect to be raising awareness and funds for such an important cause together. We hope to inspire even more people to join us this year!

One of the best parts of the Big Lap is that everyone finds their own way to challenge themselves. Last year, I, Robyn Hixon, pushed myself to learn to ride a bike (just barely made it!), while others tried running, hitting personal bests, or simply getting out and moving more. No matter what, it’s all good for us, isn’t it?

I 100% recommend getting involved. What’s not to love? We’re raising money for an incredible cause that supports us all day, every day—it’s only right that we support MATES in return. When sign-ups open, I make sure to spread the word across the office and worksites, and even if people can’t join in, they usually support by donating. I also meet up with the Train & Retain legends, visiting all of our Hanssen/Finbar sites to spread awareness about why we do this.

Mental health is incredibly important to us. At work, we’re one big family, and we live by MATES' message—supporting each other and ensuring that no one feels alone. If someone is struggling, whether it's with their mental health or experiencing suicidal thoughts, we want them to know there’s always support available—from us and from the MATES team. Our sites always have ASIST-trained workers, Connectors, and Mental Health First Aiders on hand.

This year, we’re hoping to get even more of our labour hire teams involved so we can all join forces. The support from Train & Retain has been amazing, and I’m lucky that Darren, our Managing Director at Hanssen, gives me the freedom to run with my ideas—whether it’s team-building activities, mental health check-ins, or anything related to MATES.

MATES, you’ve built such an incredible community, and I’ll always love being a part of it. Thank you for everything you do for all of us.

What we do

• MATES creates a structure of 'mates helpling mates' on site. Increased awareness about suicide in our industry creates an environment where workers feel more comfortable to talk and help each other. Further training equips volunteers to be able to recognise the signs of distress and offer help.

• Field Officers provide training and support to sites including toolbox talks, regular site visits and check-ins with volunteers or anyone needing to talk.

• MATES 24/7 Helpline 1300 642 111 is answered by qualified professionals who have great understanding of our industries and the pressures faced by workers and their families.

• Those needing further support are connected to MATES Case Managers who develop individualised plans and refer to service providers in areas asuch as gambling, relationships, industrial concerns and more.

• Postvention and Critical Incident Support is available to sites, workers and families should the need arise, by Case Managers and Field Officers connected to the site.

• The MATES Program is underpinned by extensive research conducted by a rich and diverse group of academics from a range of Australian Universities.

Your Impact

Make a difference to your Workplace

Volunteers have let us know that cultural change is happening, moving from the days of 'don't talk about it' to 'Hey mate, are you okay?'

By supporting MATES, you are helping us get more boots on the ground to provide training, support workers and their families who might be struggling, and bring about true cultural change to workplaces in our industries.
