I'm fund raising as a recent parent survivor of a son who has departed this life through suicide on 12th of February 2025. I want to raise awareness of suicide, suicide prevention and mental health and from a male point of view.

This April, I’m taking on the MATES Big Lap 2025—walking my way through the challenge all April. It’s not just about pushing myself physically, but about taking a stand for suicide prevention in our industry.

Every step i take will be about raising awareness and making sure no one struggles in silence and it's OK not to be OK.

Every dollar raised helps MATES continue their life-saving work, supporting workers and their families across all worksites and industries.

I’ll be sharing updates throughout the month and sharing my point of view as a parent—every bit of support counts. Let’s walk together for a stronger, safer industry.

My Updates

I am fundraising and raising awareness of suicide prevention as a recent bereavement survivor of my son who parted this life through suicide in February 2025.

Tuesday 22nd Apr

As a Health and Safety professional, MIC ASSIST Trained and empathetic person, sharing suicide awareness is one of the roles that I do and also what I enjoy doing. This involves talking about suicide and the stats around it, especially in young men. I do this via tool box talks and also marketing myself and our team of people within this current project who are also trained in "Connector" and "Assist". I have always taken these awareness messages home and discussed them with my boys and it just goes to show how much of a grip that mental health sickness can actually have on a person when going through the illness.

As a father and husband my role should be and is one of protection, education and support both physically, emotionally and mentally. What I have come to learn since Curtis passed is that we all (including I) do what we know to be the best at the time we make decisions, and that is all you can do. If and when you start to doubt yourself on the past ways that you have parented or the decisions that you made at those times you can either take them as a learning (good or bad) and evolve or quite easily fall into a mental health sickness yourself. I started in the latter but sought to get help as anyone would, if physically sick and now am living in the (right here and now) and not the past.

As a man, I was bought up with beliefs and values learned over my years that "boys don't cry" and to "toughen up and don't be a sooky girl". Don't show emotions just push them deep down. In recent years I have studied and learnt a lot about the cognitive brain and your body and have completed lots of self-care activities to grow, but still when in the throes of trauma, it was so easy to fall back into self-sabotaging and feelings of guilt.  Again, I sought professional help and also have also started self-care activities again, being walking (thanks to this campaign), meditating and spending quality time with friends, family and loved ones.

So, in summery I would like to pass on the following messages.

1. Talk about suicide to your friends and family and let them know that the decision is derived from a place of sickness and help can and should be sought when starting to feel mentally sick and that’s OK.

2. Teach your children and others that emotions are normal, until they start affecting your day to day thinking and activities, and there is help available and accessible.

3. Self-care is easy and you just need to make the decision to do something, and there is many ways and things that you can do.
